Frequently Asked Questions

DOES HAIR OR SKIN COLOUR PLAY A ROLE IN HAIR TRANSPLANTATION?
The closer your hair colour is to your skin colour, the better the appearance of the hair’s coverage.  African hair is dark and very curly and therefore provides the least contrast against various shades of dark skin, giving the best visual hair transplant results.  From a visual point of view, people with dark, straight hair and a light complexion pose the most artistic challenges in Hair Transplantation because they have the greatest contrast between their hair and skin shades.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OTHER VISUAL CONSIDERATIONS?
When designing your procedure, the Hair Transplant Clinic will take into account any future hair loss pattern and the rate of that potential hair loss.  The design of the restored hairline is crucial.  Natural frontal hairlines vary in shape and density from person to person.  The transplant surgeon will himself choose and make the recipient sites (not the technicians) for the transplanted hair based upon an overall design.

HOW DO THE surgeons at the hair transplant clinic DECIDE WHICH PART OF MY HEAD WILL RECEIVE THE TRANSPLANTED HAIR?
The front and top of your head will receive transplanted hair first because these are the areas that frame your face and make the most impact on your appearance.  The hairline always makes the person look at least 10 years younger.  The crown is usually the last area to receive hair (in later procedures), unless this is your only balding area.

HOW MANY PROCEDURES WILL I NEED?
The number of procedures depends upon the extent of your hair loss, the projected hair loss rate, the amount of donor hair you can spare, and other artistic and medical considerations.  Men can often have the results they’re looking for in just one or two hair transplant sessions in which thousands of hairs are transplanted in follicular units of one to four hairs each.  Women are usually satisfied by one session to achieve proper density.  The sessions can last between three to five hours each.  Future sessions can follow if necessary, after a minimum of six months.

IS THE HAIR TRANSPLANT PROCEDURE PAINFUL?
As with any surgical procedure, there is some slight discomfort but this is less than encountered at the dentist’s.  The Clinic will use the most up-to date methods during the whole procedure, including the local anaesthesia.  The Hair Transplant surgery takes place only under local anaesthesia.

AFTER THE HAIR TRANSPLANTATION SESSION, WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
When the procedure is finished, you will normally leave the clinic wearing a baseball cap (both male and female patients).  After resting that night, you will return to the clinic the following day for hair washing and drying, but please remember that under no circumstances are you allowed to operate a motor vehicle from the night before your surgery until the night of hair washing.  If you are a female patient then you also will be provided with a baseball cap and the same applies to you concerning the operation of a motor vehicle

WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP?
The next step is to relax at home, if possible.  The clinic in uses two types of suture material - if used at all - Absorbable and Non-absorbable sutures.  Depending on your type of procedure, the clinic will decide with you which one is the best choice you.  Whenever possible, the Clinic, would like to see you in 7 to 10 days, to assess the overall procedure, to remove sutures if necessary and to answer any questions that you would like to discuss.  Then finally, there is the follow-up consultation a 6 months later.
